Although merged in practice last season, four local tennis leagues have officially amalgamated under the new moniker of the Goulburn Murray Tennis Association.
The Goulburn Murray Lawn, Shepparton and District, Shepparton Junior, and Midweek Pennant Association’s have combined in what represents a major rebrand of tennis in the region, with a combination of lower numbers in certain playing areas and a desire to streamline volunteering loads reportedly at the heart of the decision.
Although competing under the GMTA banner, not much is expected to change in terms of playing structures ahead of the 2026-27 season, though the inaugural Annual General Meeting is poised to shed some light on the way ahead, according to GMLTA president Mark Mills.
“Not too much will change with the structure of play from last year,” Mills said.
“We’ll have subcommittees but also an overarching one that will keep an eye on all four associations.
“It’ll be the three competitions, your senior competitions on the weekend, and then your midweek and juniors.
“It’s always been talked about but we all decided it was time for the good of tennis to bite the bullet and go for it.
“That (AGM) will provide a bit more of a view on juniors, midweek, and the Shepp district.
“Hopefully it reduces the amount of volunteer work, which is what we’re looking for.”
The GMTA is hoping to form its new committee at the Wednesday, July 15 AGM, with around 20 positions listed as available combined across the executive and subcommittees.
“Anyone who’s interested in tennis and helping it grow in the local area, don’t be afraid to put your hand up,” Mills said.
“It’s not super scary, there’s plenty of people on the committee that will be there to help you.
“We love new voices, and new ideas are always great. Don’t be afraid to reach out and put your name down.”
The association is encouraging prospective committee members to fill out an Expression of Interest form before Wednesday, July 1.
The form, which can be located on the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club Facebook page, lists available positions and what each role entails.
