It wasn’t all peaches and cream for the Nondies Cohuna batters on Saturday at Cohuna Recreation Reserve, who found themselves in hot water early after being sent in to bat by Rochester skipper Sean Williams.
The lethal Rochester strike partnership of Angus Martin and Richard Tibbett tore through the host’s top-order, removing the first three batters without troubling the scorer.
Peter Moore hung around long enough to manufacture 25, witnessing the dismissals of Patrick Doyle and Angus Donat, who also departed without a run to their name.
Josh Novoselek was sent packing in the 22nd over to have Nondies Cohuna in dire straits at 7-57.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man.
Matt Robinson entered from miles down the order to compile a game-changing century, rescuing his side’s innings as he did so.
Robinson knew time was of the essence, with a gallant Rochester bowling outfit smelling blood in the water.
He went on to pump an astonishing eight sixes and 10 boundaries, reaching his milestone in less than 60 balls.
He’s the first to hit a century since the club’s amalgamation.
The home side was eventually bundled out for 171, Martin finishing with superb figures of 6-42 to his name, while Tibbett procured a tidy 3-24.
In reply, Nondies’ bowlers were lethal.
Rochester found itself 8-86 at the close of play, with Moore (4-25) and Xavier Wishart (2-12) helping themselves to the wickets.
A superb five-for from Bamawm Lockington United’s Amila Gunathilaka (5-33) has BLU ahead in the finals race and on top in its clash with Cooma, the Two Blues finishing on 9-138 after 67 overs.
Brad Power withstood BLU’s bowling pressure to manufacture 71 for his side.
Moama finds itself in command of its clash with Leitchville-Gunbower, putting 259 on the board for L-G to chase.
It has set up a blockbuster day two this weekend, when Kyabram Fire Brigade is also set to fight for its finals place, looking to hunt down Echuca’s day one score of 175.
With all three sides tied on points and vying for two coveted spots, the stage is set for some scintillating cricket this weekend.
