Saturday pitted the two heavyweights against each other in Goulburn Valley Playing Area’s Allan Matheson Shield, and with the sides owning a monopoly on the competition over the past decade, the game gave an early preview of what finals may look like.
It delivered in spades, as the Redlegs got up by one shot on Saturday.
Hosting side Tallygaroopna secured a 14-77 to 4-76 victory over the Golfers, pushing it 10 points clear at the top of the table with an unblemished 4-0 record.
The first two rinks favoured the visitors, as John Gribble and Peter Lesueur skipped the Golfers to seven and nine shot victories over David Daws and Kyle Pugh respectively.
However, Tally’s third and fourth sets of ends were chalk and cheese in comparison.
Mark Ryan steered his four to a 21-17 triumph, while Mitch Sidebottom saved the best for last, skipping his quartet to a resounding 26-13 result over Wayne Dagger and co.
The role reversal of last season’s grand final leaves Golf in second, while surprise packet Euroa holds third after another box office game of bowls.
Ken Sutcliffe’s charges hosted Tatura-Hill Top and, after a hard fought afternoon, emerged 12-78 to 6-77 winners.
Euroa is in fine fettle, now 3-1 with a game against sixth placed Mooroopna up next.
The Cats handed Seymour VRI its first major points since entering division one, falling 14-85 to 4-78 with Phillip Challis’ 13-shot victory proving the difference in the clash.
Finally, Shepparton Park ensured its place inside the four by sinking the boot into East Shepparton, walking away with a 16-95 to 2-66 result.
