With the season now beyond the halfway mark, the stakes are higher than ever before as clubs jostle for ladder position.
And in the women’s competition, Strikers Hockey Club was on song as its mission to ascent the local hockey summit took another step forward.
Taya Hayes was the Strikers’ focal point in their match-up against Echuca-Moama, accounting for a quartet of the sides seven goals against to propel them to victory.
Bridget Hetherington, Breanna Carr and Vanessa Hayes-Beetson rounded out the scorers for the Strikers, while Renee Davison stole one back for the River Rats.
The result sees the Strikers retain second spot in the women’s competition, while over on pitch one, pace-setting SYC was well on its way to keeping its perfect record intact against Euroa.
The latter, still seeking its first win, put up a gallant fight against the ladder leaders, but SYC star Tayah Irwin’s hat-trick in the three-nil triumph reflected her team’s classy display and top billing in the competition.
In the men’s A-grade competition, Strikers slammed home seven goals against SYC with Max Cole (four goals) and Sam Holland, Xavier McBain, and Ben Costa all contributing to the 7-1 win.
SYC’s B-grade men fared better in their top-of-the-table game against Echuca-Moama, continuing their unblemished campaign with a 2-0 win.
Meanwhile, it was a day for the defenders in the Strikers and Mooroopna bout, with both sides unable to be split in the nil-all draw.
In the State league stakes, Mooroopna Hockey Club faced off against metro counterparts Greater Dandenong.
Mooroopna hit the scoreboard through Agostina Traglia, but the Warriors were up to the challenge with three goals of their own to consign the visitors to a 3-1 defeat in Dandenong.
