The unstoppable Numurkah Warriors have fended off a valiant undermanned Shepparton Lawn The Valley to claim its fifth consecutive premiership in the Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association’s top division.
As the Warriors have done in the four years prior, the talented men and women wielding racquets peaked to the top of their powers at the right time of the season to erase any sniff of hope its opponent may have held.
While it was not the one-sided affair seen in the semi-final clash with The Valley, it appeared early on that a similar scoreline could be the case.
Jack Bassett bagelled Matt Carroll, before David Poole rallied against Jayden Doyle to win 8-2, marking a 2-16 to 0-2 advantage for the Warriors.
The Valley’s Jeremy O’Brien revived his side back into gear with a doggedly fought 4-8 win over Mark Mills, but Warrior Nick Fenaughty took to the T next, and outscored Ben O’Brien 8-5.
In the ladies’ singles, Tess Bassett romped home to an 8-1 victory to further Numurkah’s favouritism, but The Valley star Hope Curtis-McDonald continued to swing with authority seen throughout the post-season, landing an 8-1 victory right back for The Valley.
Curtis-McDonald would win her two doubles rubbers as well, claiming three of The Valley’s four set wins in the match, however her efforts were in vain as Numurkah proved too strong once again on the big stage.
Numurkah’s Poole and Tess Bassett sealed the deal in the 12th set with an 8-5 rubber win, marking the final score as 8-76 to 4-54.
The grand final triumph etches Numukah’s GM1 side into an unrivalled stratosphere, with the fifth straight title confirming its legacy as the GMLTA’s greatest dynasty to date.
