Goulburn Valley Playing Area’s 48 representatives faced off against their Murray counterparts hoping to continue their recent ascendancy, but where the GVPA has had the upper hand in its past four encounters, Murray decided it was its turn at the top of the pops.
The men’s edition was fiercely contested, with the GV overturning a 13-shot deficit after the first round, a Mitch Sidebottom-skipped 20-3 rink result turning the tables in round two.
Murray would not be dissuaded, however, winning the third and final round by 10 shots for an overall 21-204 to 21-198 victory.
Goulburn Valley’s ladies made a staunch third-round comeback but ultimately couldn’t get the chocolates over the 18 rinks, Murray walking away comfortable 29-215 to 13–174 winners.
Overall, it was a 50-419 to 34-372 win for the MPA, snapping a four-match streak for the Goulburn Valley.
But result aside, the encounter also served as a trial for the upcoming inter-regional clash between the Goulburn Murray Bowls Region and the Ovens and Murray.
And if the weekend’s action is anything to go by, selectors will have their hands full narrowing down their selections.
