MacPherson played with Footscray and the Brisbane Bears in the VFL/AFL.
MacPherson started his career at Footscray in 1982, the same year that younger brother Stephen made his debut for the club.
After his AFL days, MacPherson coached Shepparton’s 1994 premiership side which beat Echuca by 53 points.
Retired Geelong player Max Rooke, 44, has been spearheading the landmark concussion class action against the AFL and his former club since he launched the multimillion-dollar lawsuit three years ago.
Other former AFL players named in the writ are Ian Fairley (North Melbourne), (Max Rooke (Geelong), Nick Stevens (Port Adelaide, Carlton), Dylan Roberton (Fremantle) 2010-12) Jack Fitzpatrick (Melbourne), Michael Richardson (Collingwood/Essendon), Gary Frangalas (Richmond) and Brendan Littler (St Kilda).
Hawthorn is the only Melbourne-based team not to be named in the writ, filed with the Supreme Court on Tuesday of last week.
More than 100 players have “registered” to be part of the class action, but registration was a formality.
The eight players claim that they suffered “permanent, life-altering injuries” as a result of concussions due to the negligence of the AFL, which is defending the class action alongside Geelong, and the other clubs.
“The AFL can no longer turn a blind eye to what went on under its watch,” MacPherson said.
Permanent injuries suffered by the players include various neurological impairments such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury and dementia.
