In the third over he removed Cooper Sleeth for four before bowling Caleb Aitken for a duck, reducing the home side to 2-5 and handing Old Students early control of the chase.
Mooroopna steadied through a determined partnership between Joel May and Ryan Hallum, Hallum digging in for 19 from 72 balls, while May looked the most comfortable at the crease, compiling 47 from 81 deliveries with eight boundaries as the pair guided the total to 3-92.
However, Old Students struck back at a crucial moment.
Felix Odell broke the partnership when Hallum was caught, and shortly after James Meek removed May, caught by Callan McCabe, leaving Mooroopna four wickets down and still well short of the target.
From there the visitors tightened their grip on the match. Cyrus Shafi (eight), Ben Woods (two) and Paul McDonald (two) all fell cheaply as Fernando returned to claim more wickets, dismantling the middle order and effectively ending Mooroopna’s hopes of victory.
The tail showed brief resistance, with Jack Gaskill striking a quick 12, but Meek dismissed him when he was caught by Sam O’Brien.
The innings ended soon after when Corey Meyer was trapped LBW by McCabe, sealing Mooroopna’s total of 165.
The victory was set up on day one when Old Students battled their way to 221 after early wickets left them in trouble at 4-38.
A vital rebuilding effort from Sam O’Brien (66) and Rehan Bari (46) stabilised the innings before Callan McCabe added a valuable 39, giving the visitors a defendable total heading into the second day.
With Fernando leading the bowling attack and strong support from Meek, Odell and McCabe, Old Students capitalised on that platform to complete a well-earned 56-run victory.
