At Clayton Oliver’s second AFL club, the fresh face in orange has immediately made an impact on his peers as preseason for the 2026 campaign begins.
Oliver was traded from Melbourne in October’s trade period following nearly a decade and more than 200 games of service for the red and blue, including the 2021 premiership.
Following a string of off-field issues and on-field output suffering a slump in form, Oliver departed for a clean start interstate, and by his new teammate’s report, the change of scenery may bring out the 28-year-old’s best.
Emerging GWS midfielder Harry Rowston sung high praises of Oliver, stating the recruit has made an immediate impression at the Giants.
“I mean he’s a beast isn’t he,” Rowston said.
“He just finds the footy and his running patterns and things like that (are elite).
“I can’t wait to watch vision with him and pick his brain about what it takes to be an elite midfielder like himself.
“I’m pretty keen to get in there and learn as much as I can off him.”
While a vocal portion of AFL opinionists and fans on social media have painted concerns over Oliver regarding his form and fitness, Rowston firmly believes Oliver will make an instant impact from opening round onwards.
Despite Oliver and Rowston vying for the same position at the centre circle, the burgeoning youngster understands that team success is paramount for the Giants, who lost in an elimination final this year.
“It’s only going to improve the team and myself,” Rowston said.
“Obviously it’s another midfielder in the team but if I can’t play in the midfield then I’ll try and find somewhere else to play.
“It’s just going to be a great learning experience to pick his brain and learn as much as I can, so it’s only going to better the club.”
