The Benalla forward made his entrance to the VFL arena on Saturday for the Northern Bullants and produced the standalone VFL club’s top individual score in a 44-point defeat to Port Melbourne.
The 22-year-old slotted two goals and two behinds from 10 disposals while positioned as a key target inside 50, and although the result didn’t fall in favour of the two-win club, there are plenty of positives Wright can take out of the performance.
Wright clunked seven marks and recorded four inside 50s, demonstrating more than just a knack for finding the goals.
In the GVL this season, Wright has kicked 46 goals from 14 games this season at Benalla, placed equal-second on the league’s goalkicking leaderboard, although with one less game to his name following his state league selection.
It’s a selection Wright has been aspiring for since heading down from Queensland to play GVL football, with Wright’s uptick in scoring output under Jarrad Waite’s guidance putting him on the radar of the Bullants, and also Werribee.
The Bullants are a hot spot for scouted football talent, with three mature-aged Bullants products drafted onto AFL lists since 2023, with footy factory Werribee the only standalone club to have more drafted out of their system in that time frame.
Across the VFL landscape, Shepparton Swans gun Oliver Warburton featured in his fifth game for Carlton’s reserves this season, recording 10 touches and two tackles in defeat to Frankston.
Former Shepparton Bear Harry Boyd recorded 25 hit-outs and 12 disposals for Sandringham in its 23-point win over North Melbourne, while Mansfield’s Harry Mahoney was influential in Collingwood’s 11-point win over Williamstown, recording 18 disposals and a goal.
Brother Max Mahoney also played in the top-ten clinching result and had 11 disposals and three tackles.
