Duke of Edinburgh Shield – Sat/Sun, April 13 and 14
The gathering of RSL Bowlers at 9.30am for ‘Stand To’ was a poignant time on Saturday, April 13; Hats were removed, Last Post was played, a minutes silence to remember the fallen was held followed by Reveille and the beautiful Australian flag was raised to the mast head.
On this weekend, April 13 and 14, approximately 1400 RSL Bowlers across 15 venues competed for the Duke of Edinburgh Shield. ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls Club, Yarrawonga Bowls Club and the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort Bowls Club were lucky enough to be selected as venues for this prestigious event. This report is from the event held at ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls Club.
Bathed in brilliant sunshine for the entire weekend, the greens, beautifully prepared for the event by our greenskeeper Gary Parker welcomed 116 bowlers from around Victoria including Rye, Greensborough, Clayton, Frankston, Phillip Island and of course our very own ClubMulwala Bowls Club bowlers.
There was, of course a will to win this prestigious event by all taking part however the competitors need to be congratulated on the manner in which the games were played in a very competitive but sportsman like manner.
Results as follows:
1st place - Phillip Island
2nd place - Clayton
3rd place - ClubMulwala
4th place - Greensborough
5th place - Rye
6th place - Frankston
Congratulations go to the winners Phillip Island. Win, lose or draw – there were really no losers as we were all out on the greens enjoying each other’s company.
We thank Yarrawonga Mulwala RSL Sub Branch for their continued support and in particular David King for his efforts in the organising of the event.
A lot of work was completed by Stephen McPhee (chair) and our match committee in the lead up to and during the event. Our venue manager Mark Smith was tireless in his organisation and running of the event and was ably assisted by Kylie Williams with the scoring throughout. The event umpire was Don Lockhart who would surely have wanted to be on the greens, however generously gave up his time to provide this very important role. Thank you to Trevor Loe and Gary Parker who ran the bar. It would be remiss of us if we didn’t thank our members who assisted with the set up and tear down each day. Without these people we cannot run tournaments such as this. Thank you.
Of course, the ClubMulwala staff were once again magnificent in their assistance and adapted quickly when minor changes had to be made.
Overall a great weekend of good bowls, great friendships renewed and made and the sharing of good times by like-minded souls was enjoyed by all.

YMGCR Bowls
Wednesday Social Bowls
The fine weather and the promise of greens running freely saw a solid turnout of 24 players for Wednesday Social Bowls on April 10. Games were played across both the west and east greens. The format was the popular three-bowl pairs played over two games of 12 ends. Winners on the day, were the pairing of Gary Presnell (S) and Willy Lockwood (L), who won both games and finished with plus 21 shots.
Runners-up with both games won and plus 15 shots were the combo of Col Withers (S), and Neville Coleman (L). Also winning well but finishing outside the prizemoney were the pairing of Mick Reilly (S), and Lynne Baxter (L), who won both games with a plus 13 shot tally. The Rolling Jackpot did not go off and next week climbs to $40. The Lucky Numbers were won by Keith Eade and Chris Horne.
Friday Social Bowls
Fine weather saw 36 players enjoy the conditions on both greens on Friday, April 12. The 2x4x2 bowl format played over one game of 18 ends in many ways replicates a solid pennant practice session and seems to be very popular. The winners were the team of Bill Jenkins and Lynne Baxter. The runners up were the pairing of Shan and Mike Klodinski. The Consolation Prize went to the combo of Peter Verlado and Trevor Kilpatrick.
Vale Bette Clarke
It is with sadness that we report on the passing of Bette Clarke who died on April 1 at the grand age of 102. Bette was a member of YMGCR bowls from the mid-1980s to 1996.
Bette was born on December 18, 1921 at Nuneaton, Warwickshire England. Bette met her husband, Bill Clarke, during the Second World War. Bette and Bill were married in 1943 while serving in the British Armed Forces, Bill with the Army and Bette with the ATS where she served in catering.
Looking to a better chance in life for their children, Bette and Bill emigrated to Australia in 1958 as part of the now famous 10 Pound Emigration Plan.
After moving to Yarrawonga in retirement Bette and Bill were active members of the local community, with Bette being a keen lawn bowler. Bill’s ill health saw the couple move back to Melbourne to be closer to their family in 1996.
Bette still enjoyed completing cryptic crosswords, with her daughter Chris, up to the time of her death and she also retained a sharp sense of memory.
Bette is survived by her five children, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. To Bette’s family we pass on our thoughts and condolences.
