Locked to the bottom of the ladder at the end of last season, Euroa has risen from the ashes and is firmly entrenched inside the top four on the Goulburn Valley Playing Area division one table.
The emerging outfit faces a stern test this weekend with a road trip to take on reigning premier Shepparton Golf.
Euroa skip Marc Stevens spoke about taking on the competition’s juggernaut outfit on After The Jack.
“We’re going to know where we are at this weekend against Shepp Golf,” he said.
“It’s always good to play against the best. (Golf) are certainly the best, they have been for six years. I’m looking forward to it and hopefully we are competitive.”
Stevens said he was pleased with how Euroa had been able to bounce back from the opening-round loss to Kyabram.
The Magpies were well in control that day but once the rain hit and greens slowed by a few seconds, Kyabram was able to turn the tide and claimed a 13-shot win.
“The first game was disappointing,” Stevens said.
“At one stage we were 26 up and then we had the break when the rain came ... full credit to Kyabram, they handled the conditions better than us.
“But we bounced back with two wins in a row.”
Shepparton Golf coach Brad Orr, speaking after his side’s gritty round three win over Tallygaroopna, said his side understood Euroa would be no pushover.
“We are just going to take each week as it comes and we won’t underestimate anybody.
“Euroa have started the season strongly and we’re looking forward to [this] weekend.”
- In the remaining Allan Matheson Shield matches, East Shepparton and Tatura-Hill Top are both gunning for their first wins of the season.
East faces a road trip to Stanhope, while the Bulldogs are at home against Tallygaroopna.
The Eagles will be out to leap-frog seventh-placed Stanhope.
Tatura-Hill Top — after a narrow defeat to the Golfers in round one — is yet to pencil in a win.
A loss in round four and both outfits will find themselves close to waving goodbye to finals action.
