Involved at Finley since she was a junior, Wilson says she already has some ideas on how to improve engagement with the club and performance on the court.
She said her first priority would be to boost the senior netball ranks.
“Last year we unfortunately were lacking in numbers due to COVID, but we’re hoping to get people back to the club,” Wilson said.
“I really want to get past players back and create a welcoming environment for everyone.
“This year I really want to change the culture and open us up to players new and old.”
The star goal defender was drafted as an A-grade player at 15, starting her netball career as a goal attack.
She said her experience with both positions made her versatile on the court and that she wanted to pass that approach on to new players.
“Your best defender is your best attacker and your best attacker is your best defender,” she said.
“If you can anticipate what the other team is going to do, you’re going to be better on the court and be able to anticipate what they’re going to do.
“It means that no matter what the strengths of the opposite team are, we can reverse their play and make it our own.”
Wilson will begin her recruitment drive immediately, reaching out to old players and capable juniors.
“Come 2022 it will be go time and we’ll have the summer to work on our techniques and abilities,” she said.
Finley president Ashley Haynes said Wilson’s history showed she had a commitment to the Cats.
He said her playing experience should translate well as she guides the team.
“She’s an absolute gun and we’re glad to have her,” Haynes said.
