Mooroopna runs rings around Eaglehawk in RHL

Mooroopna has come out charging in May, smashing Eaglehawk to smithereens in Sunday’s Regional Hockey League bout.

Returning to do battle with Hockey Central Victoria’s outfits following a small Goulburn Valley Hockey Associated-induced hiatus, the Cats found success in spades during round five.

First up were the A-women, slotting eight past the visitors without reply.

Stephanie Cardamone and Alexandra Van den Berg hit hat-tricks, while Gabriella Cardamone and captain Kerry Gannon rounded out the scoring for the hosts.

The poem ended in comparable fashion for Mooroopna’s A-men.

Ryan Davey doubled up, as did Gurpreet Bhullar, to lift Kieran Vaviours’ side to a 4-0 win and into fifth on the ladder.

In the round’s other games, Echuca-Moama produced a 3-1 win against Sandhurst, while Shepparton Strikers took a forfeit victory over Strathdale Roar.

On Friday and Saturday, lower grades battled it out for supremacy in the GVHA.

Echuca-Moama had the better of Mooroopna 3-1 in B-men, while Strikers dug deep to grind out a 2-1 result over Shepparton Youth Club 2-1.

Mooroopna turned the tables on Echuca-Moama in B-women, edging out the River Rats 3-1.

Later on, the Strikers issued a statement to the competition by breezing past Euroa 6-0 under lights, while SYC enjoyed sending four unanswered goals past Benalla to gain its second win of the campaign.

In the youth division, Isabella Ferguson, Leah Kerr and Olivia Mathers all hit the back of the net to power Echuca-Moama past Mooroopna 3-0.

SYC-Strikers also tasted glory, seeing off the challenge of Goulburn Valley Grammar School to round out 5-1 victors.

At under-14 level, there was razzamatazz aplenty about Echuca-Moama’s 6-0 performance, while GVGS prevailed in a seven-goal thriller over Strikers.

And lastly, a goal hungry SYC had the net rattling as it smoked Strikers 19-0 in the under-12s, while Benalla was at the mercy of GVGS 2-0.
