Bowls news across the region

The Ovens and Murray Challenge approaches large on the horizon and the Goulburn Valley Bowls Division has assembled stellar line-ups to tackle the event.

Five teams will represent the GVBD at Benalla Bowls Club tomorrow, with two men's, two ladies and an officials squad set to take on the Challenge.

Among the skips of the men's teams are the likes of Shepparton Golf's Col Power, Brad Orr and John Stokes, with East Shepparton's Geoff Franze, Kyabram's Greg Shilling and Shepparton Park's Paul Nichols also set to steer respective rinks.

The ladies team is highlighted by the likes of Rushworth's Jean Sprague, Shepparton Park's Di Hands and Shepparton Golf's Kris Wright.

The first match begins at 10am tomorrow, with two games of 18 ends to be staged as teams vie for the sought-after silverware.

● In other bowls news, Bowls Victoria has announced its first state teams of the new year - with plenty of GV faces involved.

Victoria will take on South Australia across open men's, women's and under-18 Test series’ at McLaren Vale Bowls Club from January 14 to 16.

East Shepparton's Stacey Collier has been selected as a third in the women's side, joining son Bailey Leask who will line up alongside Rochester product Cam Keenan and Kyabram's Olivia Cartwright in the under-18 series.

Katamatite export Curt Hanley will also make the interstate trip as part of the men's squad, while Tallygaroopna's Matt Robertson was one of the selectors for BV.
