Groundwater allocations announced for Lower Campaspe Valley Water Supply Protection AreaBy Ivy Jensen
GROUNDWATER licence holders in the Lower Campaspe Valley Water Supply Protection Area will have a 75 per cent allocation for the 2020-21 season.
The allocation has been determined in accordance with the Lower Campaspe Valley Water Supply Protection Area Groundwater Management Plan, approved by the Water Minister in October 2012.
The allocation applies to the licensed groundwater entitlement, but not to entitlement carried over from the previous season.
Goulburn-Murray Water groundwater and streams manager Matthew Pethybridge said the announcement marked the first time since the 2012 plan began that all licensed users in the area would be restricted.
“Low rainfall and high use from the Deep Lead aquifer system in recent years have resulted in groundwater levels declining below the trigger, requiring restrictions to be imposed across the plan area,” Mr Pethybridge said.
The Lower Campaspe Valley Water Supply Protection Area extends from Lake Eppalock to the Murray River and incorporates Echuca, Rochester, Goornong, Elmore, Lockington and Axedale.
