Residents in Shepparton, Mooroopna and Tatura have fallen victim to vehicle break-ins and number plate thefts at a rate that Shepparton Criminal Investigation Unit First Constable Williams said was higher than most weeks.
“It’s about upward of 10 for each crime (vehicle break-in and number plate theft),” she said.
“It goes through waves, but in the last week or two, it’s been increased.
“It’s usually parked vehicles in the street or in driveways.
“Some (of the) vehicles have been taken, but primarily it’s been theft of plates and breaking into vehicles.”
First Constable Williams said there was one thing the break-ins had in common.
“They’re entering the cars to look for items within mainly unlocked cars,” she said.
“Be vigilant at night, locking vehicles, and take extra security measures like CCTV footage.
“Some (of the break-ins) have been captured on CCTV, and that’s what led to us making inquiries.”
As for number plates, Constable Williams recommended people go to Shepparton Police Station and get the special one-way anti-theft screws installed.
First Constable Williams said police were still figuring out whether the incidents were linked, but had already charged someone with theft from motor vehicles.
Police said they were still investigating a number of the incidents.
