Shepparton police Sergeant Mark Phillips said several people had told police about concerns that a man was walking around the sideshow alley area with a baseball bat in a backpack on Saturday night, before security pointed out the man to police at 9.40pm.
Police spoke to the man about the baseball bat being considered a weapon, before searching his bag.
Inside, they found an imitation gun — a BB gun that police said looked like a semiautomatic handgun — Sgt Phillips said.
A machete, a knife and a tool modified into a knife were also allegedly in the bag.
The baseball bat — which is considered by police as a weapon if a person is not about to play baseball or has just played baseball — was also in the bag.
A 34-year-old Shepparton man was arrested and charged with possessing an imitation firearm and multiple weapons offences.
He was refused bail in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 13, and was remanded in custody to next appear in court in November.
Sgt Phillips said the overall behaviour at the show on Saturday was very good, especially given the large size of the crowd, which he said would have reached about 10,000 on Saturday night.
Other than the incident, Sgt Phillips said there were lots of “minor push and shove assaults” but none that required police intervention, and a couple of minor thefts.
