A 27-year-old man pleaded guilty at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to failing to render assistance after an accident, careless driving and unlicensed driving.
Prosecutor Rachel Elliot said the man caused a three-car crash at the intersection of Wyndham and Vaughan Sts in Shepparton while unlicensed on March 15, 2024.
He drove through a red light and hit a Holden sedan travelling east, crossing the intersection on Vaughan St.
He then spun and hit a second car that was turning right from Vaughan St on to Wyndham St.
He attempted to drive away from the scene; however, the car was too damaged, and he fled the scene on foot.
Police later found him at the Shepparton Law Courts.
The man and the driver of one of the cars were taken to Goulburn Valley Health and were cleared, and all three cars needed to be towed.
The court heard he made full admissions to police about driving unlicensed, failing to stop at a red light and failing to stop after an accident.
He told police he left the scene because he knew he was unlicensed, and he went to the courthouse because his girlfriend was there, and it was her car.
Representing himself in court, the man said there was no excuse for what he did.
“I chose to do the wrong thing,” he said.
The man told the court he had autism, learning difficulties and type 1 diabetes.
Magistrate Amina Bhai gave him credit for being honest about the incident, and placed him on an adjourned undertaking to be of good behaviour for 12 months.
The man was driving this XR6 and ran from the crash scene.
