        “Because of my family history, I’d been keeping up with those appointments.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “I didn’t feel anything myself but during that check the doctor found a lump.”
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        That moment changed everything.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Although Jessica knew breast cancer ran in her family, she never expected to face it in her early 30s.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “Mum was 15 years older than I am now when she was first diagnosed,” she said. “You always think it’s something that happens later in life.”
    
                  
                                                                
                  
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Since her diagnosis, Jessica has completed chemotherapy at GV Health and is preparing for surgery in Melbourne.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Most of her care, including her specialist appointments, biopsy and treatment, has been provided locally.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “I’ve been really lucky to have nearly all of my treatment in Shepparton,” Jessica said.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “The team here has been amazing.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “The breast care nurses organised everything, answered every question and made it all feel a lot less overwhelming.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “The oncology nurses and doctors have been so supportive too, even when they’re telling me what I don’t want to hear.”
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        GV Health McGrath Breast Care Nurse Melissa Gilmour said Jessica’s story highlighted the importance of being breast-aware and getting checked regularly no matter your age.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “Breast cancer isn’t just something that affects older women,” Melissa said.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “We’re seeing more younger women being diagnosed, so it’s vital to get to know your own body and notice what’s normal for you.”
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Melissa encourages all women to check their breasts monthly and seek medical advice if they notice any changes.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “You can start as early as your 20s,” she said.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “Even something as simple as looking at your breasts in the mirror after a shower can help you pick up changes in shape, size or skin texture.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “If something doesn’t look or feel right, see your GP straight away.”
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        For women aged 40 and over, BreastScreen Victoria offers free mammograms every two years.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Those aged 50 to 74 receive invitations automatically, but anyone 40 and above can book a screening by calling 13 20 50.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Melissa also explained that for some families, genetics could play a role.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “In certain cases, people may carry genes that increase their risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer,” she said.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “If there’s a strong family history, it’s worth discussing genetic testing and proactive screening options with your doctor.”
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Jessica said the experience had reminded her how important it was to talk about breast health and to encourage others to take it seriously.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “Since being diagnosed, I’ve seen so many stories of young women my age going through the same thing,” she said.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “It really opened my eyes.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “I tell all my friends now, check yourselves and book your screenings.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “It’s better to know.”
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        While treatment hasn’t been easy, Jessica’s positivity and the support of the GV Health team have made a huge difference.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “They don’t just treat the illness, they care about you as a person,” she said.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “They’ve looked after me so well.
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        “I couldn’t have asked for better care close to home.”
    
                  
                                                                                                                                                                                    
                              
        Melissa said that holistic, person-centred approach was at the heart of cancer care at GV Health.
