Year 6 student Johan Jino has won the Primary Art category of The MacKillop Art Exhibition, which was awarded on Friday, November 11 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo.

The exhibition is an annual event showcasing students’ work from Year 3 to Year 12 from across the Sandhurst Diocese.
Johan’s art teacher Brooke Thompson entered two of his artworks in this year’s competition, with Self Portrait winning the Primary Art Award and A Child’s Blossom entered in the Spiritual Primary Art category.
“(The works) are generally done in classrooms as class projects,” Ms Thompson said.
“His assessment was a standout compared to everyone else — it literally looked like him and it was amazing.”

Johan’s Self Portrait was created with charcoal and graphite pencil, based on a photograph of himself, while the acrylic painting, titled A Child’s Blossom, depicted a tree growing and following a path to Jesus, with the clouds representing heaven.
At the St Luke’s Catholic Primary School assembly on Friday, November 18 Johan was celebrated for his achievements with a certificate and $100 voucher.
Johan felt his hard work paid off, with his teachers, parents and peers recognising the dedication he put into his work.
“I just really took my time and did it ... I watched tutorials on how to paint and I’m getting more into art,” Johan said.
“I feel very excited and I really feel proud.”
The MacKillop Art Exhibition is open for public viewing until Sunday, November 27 at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo.
