Wind can’t stop Numurkah’s farming celebration

Among the standout entrants were Year 8 Finley High School student Abby Mitchell, from Jerilderie, with one-month-old calf Wow, and Year 9 student Matilda Burns, from Finley, who exhibited the school’s grand champion female cow, Unreal.

Finley High brought 12 students and 15 animals to the show, with agriculture teacher Gary Webb saying students were up bright and early to prepare.

“It was an early start — up at 4am — but the kids loved it,” he said.

Show president Stuart Cameron said the windy weather caused some challenges, but the event remained a success.

“We had a few tables blow over, but we got away with it pretty well,” he said.

Despite the gusts of wind, rides continued running throughout the day.

“The showies do their own thing and were going to monitor it,” Mr Cameron said.

“They might have stopped for a couple of minutes when there were big bursts of wind, but no major stops.

“We need the show for the local community — it’s the heart of the town.”

A Poll Hereford bull from Zeerust took out the supreme beef exhibit, continuing his winning streak after success at the Melbourne Royal Show.
