Here’s a list of resources you can access for the items you’ve been meaning to get rid of.
Batteries and e-waste
Batteries contain heavy metals including nickel, cadmium, mercury, and lithium, which if disposed of in landfill can pollute the environment and be a fire risk for garbage handlers.
Small electronic devices also contain batteries and other components which can’t go in normal household waste, such as vapes, e-cigarettes, smart devices, bluetooth earbuds and irons.
All types of batteries and small e-waste items can be disposed of for free at the following locations:
Shepparton Resource Recovery Centre, 125 Wanganui Rd, open from 8am to 4.15pm Mondays to Saturdays and 9am to 4.15pm on Sundays and public holidays.
Ardmona Resource Recovery Centre, 770 Turnbull Rd, open from 8am to 4.15pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and 9am to 4.15pm on Sundays and public holidays.
Murchison Resource Recovery Centre, 15 Cassidy Rd, open from noon to 3.45pm on Sundays.
Larger e-waste can also be accepted for a fee.
Whitegoods are also accepted for a cost, except washing machines, which are accepted for free.
Soft plastics
City of Greater Shepparton does not currently have a soft plastic recycling service and while you can put soft plastic in your red bin, there are drop off locations in neighbouring areas if you wish to recycle instead.
Soft plastics, including cling film and bubble wrap, can be dropped off for free at the following locations:
Echuca Resource Recovery Centre, 510 McKenzie Rd, open from 8am to 4.45pm Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 3.45pm on Sundays.
Mt Scobie Resource Recovery Centre, 479 Everard Rd (corner Curr Rd), Kyabram, open from 8am to noon Tuesdays to Fridays and 8am to 3.45pm on weekends.
Rochester Resource Recovery Centre, 139 High St (Cnr Sullivan St), open from 1pm to 4pm on Tuesdays and 9am to noon on Thursdays and Sundays.
Sharps
Sharps should only be disposed of in dedicated sharps containers as they present a danger to anyone handling waste through possible exposure to blood-borne illnesses.
Greater Shepparton City Council provides a free sharps disposal service for people with diabetes or other medical needs via the reception at 90 Welsford St Shepparton, open 9am to 4pm on weekdays.
A full container can be exchanged for an empty one free of charge for residents and at minimal cost for businesses.
A needle exchange program is also available at Primary Care Connect Shepparton at 399 Wyndham St, which is open from 8.30am to 5pm weekdays and open late until 7pm on Wednesdays.
The service is confidential, judgement free and can connect clients with drug and alcohol services.
Nappies and incontinence aids
If you need to free up some space in your red bin, residents can arrange a separate pickup from the council for free.
