The land, located within the Waterbird Creek Precinct, is just one of a dozen sites across Victoria that will be unlocked to help deliver more than 2000 new homes under the Victorian Government’s Unlocking Strategic Sites program.
This includes sites in Ballarat, Warrnambool, Melbourne and Gippsland.
The program fast-tracks the rezoning of underused land for new homes, jobs and investment.
Right now, rezoning land through councils can take two or more years.
The government said the streamlined approach could cut this process in half, getting more homes built faster.
“This program is unlocking thousands more homes by making sure suitable sites don't sit idle for years,” Planning Minister Sonia Kilkenny said.
“Instead of suitable sites sitting in the planning system for years, we’re getting them assessed faster so more homes can be built sooner.”
Every project will be subject to a planning assessment and community consultation.
Projects will require a minimum of 10 per cent affordable housing.
