Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world, with one person diagnosed every 30 minutes, and one person dying from the disease every six hours.

More than 100 Cobram-Barooga residents participated in the Melanoma March on Sunday, March 15 at Kennedy Park, Thompsons Beach.
Local Paul Ukich has lived and worked in the area for 30 years and attended the march for the first time on Sunday.

Mr Ukich cut the ribbon and said a few words about his own journey battling melanoma to start the march off.
“It was quite uplifting ... everybody was very supportive of each other,” he said.
“The event was well organised, it was worthwhile doing and it had a good community feel.

“It’s a beautiful location down at Thompsons Beach and the weather's always good this time of year.”
Cobram-Barooga Melanoma March organiser Julie Cameron started the march three years ago, as she wanted to support her friend and the closest march was in Melbourne.
“My dear friend is currently battling melanoma and has been for about six years,” she said.
“I just wanted to create something that was initially for her, but for everyone really.

“It's about raising awareness ... be aware of your body and if you think something’s not right, get it checked because early detection is the key.
Ms Cameron said it was an “emotional day” with the number of people who have or know someone who has been affected by the disease.
“It's important to show that there is support out there and these sort of days bring the community together,” she said.
At last count, the march had raised $7000, with Max's on the Beach Cafe still to make a donation later this week.
