Tatwash owner Jamie Fawcett installed the electrical charging station at his business to help bring visitors to the town and boost the local economy.
Helped by the Greater Shepparton City Council, Mr Fawcett lodged a case study and a funding application to the Destination Charging Across Victoria program, run by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
His application was successful and Mr Fawcett received $14,000, half the total cost, to help buy and install the charging station.
The charger opened six weeks ago and joined another two 50kwDC charging stations based in Shepparton and Mooroopna and four AC chargers at Shepparton Art Museum.
As well as providing power for visitors, the chargers help keep council’s eight electric vehicles on the road and make up an integral part of its efforts to promote zero emission transport.
Council’s sustainable development director Geraldine Christou said council wanted to see more chargers across the region.
“Greater Shepparton City Council is very supportive of new EV chargers in the region … and understand the importance of fast, convenient chargers to enable this transition to a low carbon future as quickly as possible,” she said.
Another 50kwDC charger was proposed for Shepparton.
Mr Fawcett believed there was a strong future for EV chargers.
“In the future I see these EV chargers being part of everyday life.”
