Despite the prevalence of hearing issues, research indicates that nearly half of Australians have never undergone a hearing test, in stark contrast to the high percentage who have had their eyes checked.
This underlines the critical need for increased awareness and accessibility to hearing healthcare services.
Hearing Australia managing director Kim Terrell emphasised the simplicity and significance of undergoing a hearing check with more than 1000 free events scheduled nationwide.
“Getting your hearing checked is a painless, quick and easy process that could have life-changing impacts,” Mr Terrell said.
“We know accessing medical check-ups can sometimes be a challenge, so we are holding more than 1000 free hearing check events all across the country in March, making it easier than ever to look after your hearing health.”
With statistics revealing that one in six Australians currently grapple with hearing loss, a figure projected to double by 2060, the importance of regular hearing assessments cannot be overstated.
“This year we want to see even more people and we strongly encourage anyone who struggles to hear at home, in the office or at social events to act and get their hearing checked,” Mr Terrell said.
According to Hearing Australia’s principal audiologist Karen Hirschausen, detecting, diagnosing and treating hearing loss is a significant way for people to better connect with their families, friends and community.
Specially equipped hearing buses will be stopping in city, rural and remote locations in every state and territory, with other hearing events planned for pharmacies and community centres nationwide.
“Education and early detection can be really important for most health issues and hearing is no different,” Mrs Hirschausen said.
“Our team of hearing experts can not only provide hearing checks or referrals for further assessment or support, but also advice on how to protect your hearing to prevent hearing loss.
“We have been delivering hearing services to Australians for more than 75 years and we’re committed to making it easier for everyone to get hearing help when and where they need it.
“Our teams live, work in and are a part of their local communities and the Hearing the Nation events give us more opportunities to connect with people from regional and rural areas.”
Free events will be held at the Kerrabee Soundshell Public Reserve in Moama on Sunday, March 3, from 8am to 2pm, and at 49 Victoria St, Kerang, on Monday, March 4, from 9am to 3pm.
All adults across Australia are encouraged to jump on the Hearing Australia website at hearing.com.au and add their postcode to register for their nearest event.
