Super school concerns aired in Nationals phone survey

A recent survey has further revealed community concerns over Shepparton's controversial super school, with more than 60 per cent of those surveyed opposing the plan.

The Nationals-commissioned survey contacted 250 people at random on Thursday and Friday night, with concerns raised about the level of consultation around the project.

According to the results, just 18.6 per cent of those surveyed supported the super school, while about 20 per cent of people were unsure.

The telephone survey asked if the listener supported the super school, their concern level in regards to lack of promised funding and if there had been adequate consultation from ‘‘Labor and the independent Member for Shepparton (Suzanna Sheed)’’.

“The consultation process for this school merger has been a complete sham designed to railroad the community to a predetermined outcome.

“There is much to be done to improve opportunity for young people in Shepparton but it needs to be an effort that is built hand-in-hand with the community and grounded in evidence.”

Victorian Education Minister James Merlino hit out at the Coalition.

"Frankly the National party and the Liberal party are irrelevant and they're choosing now to play politics with this, I tell you what they're doing, they're turning their backs on the kids of Shepparton, Mooroopna and the Goulburn Valley.

"We have had four decades of student outcomes in this region that are way below national minimum standards and we've got to make a change."
