Moira Shire Council sought feedback on the boat ramp, located inside the Holiday Park, to help inform master planning for the park’s future.
A report to Council detailed the results of community consultation, which attracted 517 responses, of which 98 per cent said the holiday park ramp should remain open to the public.
A more detailed survey with 158 respondents, plus written submissions, echoed the poll’s results.
Before Council considers the matter further, the park will be asked to consider possible ways to maintain public access as part of their future planning processes and to determine if other options are feasible.
This will also include better understanding of current usage of the boat ramp.
In the meantime, public access to the boat ramp is unchanged.
Moira Shire Council chair administrator, Dr Graeme Emonson said it was important to fully consider a range of potential options that consider plans to substantially redevelop the Holiday Park, and boat ramp usage.
“The boat ramp is used for fishing, boating and recreation,” Dr Emonson said.
“It is important that we understand the extent of that use as part of future master planning processes for the Holiday Park.”
Council undertook community engagement following concerns from the Yarrawonga Holiday Park about operational and safety challenges for the park, and difficulties implementing future improvements, caused by public access to the ramp.
Closing public access to the park ramp had been foreshadowed several years ago by the previous Council, once the Cullens Road ramp was built, however regular users of the boat ramp say that the Cullens Rd boat ramp is not suitable.
Recurring themes in community support for the holiday park boat ramp included water levels, safety, ease-of-use, proximity to town and access for shore-based fishing.
“To assist with understanding the impact of maintaining public access and to further inform a potential masterplan for the holiday park, there will be an assessment of actual use and type of use of the boat ramp,” Dr Emonson said.
“This will reveal the impact from foot traffic versus vehicle traffic at different times of the day and different times of the year.”
