Emergency services were called at 9.50pm last night after the ute left the road and struck a fence.
The crash set surrounding grassland alight, which attracted the attention of passing motorists.
A man, believed to be a passenger, died at the scene.
A second man was seen lying near the wreckage surrounded by fire and he was dragged to safety by the witnesses.
The man, aged 28, has been airlifted to Prince Albert Hospital, Melbourne, with non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation has commenced by officers attached to Murray River Police District, assisted by the Crash Investigation Unit.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Spate of crashes over 6 weeks
There has been a spate of serious crashes across the region over the past six weeks.
On January 20, a 23 year old man was flown to Melbourne with serious injuries after he was found on Spring Drive, trapped inside his car, which had flipped on its roof.
Last night’s accident brings the number of lives lost in this region since mid December to seven.
A man died yesterday morning in a single vehicle crash on Spring Drive.
The crash is under investigation but it is believed his car left the road, crashed into a tree and caught fire.
Investigators described the vehicle as “unrecognisable”.
Last week, Oaklands mother, Stacey Carter, 41, died when her car hit a tree on Bynedale Rd near Rand.
Her partner and daughter were flown to hospital with critical injuries and her son was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Four foreign farm workers died in a crash near Cobram on December 15 after the van they were travelling in left the road and crashed into a tree.
The driver of the van was placed under police guard and the crash is still under investigation, though no charges have been laid.

The driver in a single vehicle accident near Mulwala yesterday has died.
At about 7.50 this morning, emergency services responded to reports that a car had crashed into a tree and caught fire along Spring Drive, near Kyffins Reserve.
The driver was the sole occupant and died before emergency services arrived.
Crews from the Rural Fire Service extinguished the fire and officers from Murray River Police District have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.
The identify of the driver is unknown at this stage but believed to be a man in his 30s.
A crime scene was established and Spring Drive was closed for eight hours.
