A sunny autumn morning set the scene for a relaxed nature journalling workshop held at the Government Tank Paddock in Berrigan earlier this month.

Ricegrowers Association of Australia local landcare coordinator Andrea Mitchell guided a small group of participants as they settled into the shade to sketch and observe the surrounding landscape.
Ms Mitchell drew attention to one of the site’s rarer native species, the native liquorice plant (Glycyrrhiza acanthocarpa).
“Abundant on the channel banks, the plant thrives in the area’s heavier, seasonally wet clay soils,” she said.
“Its distinctive purple or white flowers have now set seed, making it an ideal subject for close study and illustration.
“Attendees learned how to put together a simple, portable nature journalling kit, enabling them to capture sketches and field notes wherever they travel.
“The morning concluded with shared biscuits and a cuppa, offering time for conversation and connection.”
The workshop was supported through a Murray Irrigation (MIL) grant and forms part of the March Wellness Muster of three events celebrating wellbeing, nature, and community.
“It was a lovely opportunity for like‑minded Berrigan locals to come together, slow down, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Tank Paddock,” Ms Mitchell said.
