During the two-day leadership initiative on August 28 and 29, students from various schools across Greater Shepparton came together for hands-on workshops, leadership challenges and thought-provoking discussions.
The program, organised by Goulburn Murray Community Leadership and supported by a grant from Greater Shepparton City Council, aimed to build confidence and foster community connections among young people.
Undoubtedly, a highlight was the ‘Youth Voice Pitch’, where participants presented ideas on issues that mattered most to them.
This exercise was at the nucleus of the initiative — helping young people find their voice in the community.
“Our region is full of passionate and capable young people who want to make a difference,” GMCL executive officer Jesse Mitchell said.
“The Future Leaders Program creates a space for their voices to be heard while developing the skills and networks they need to step into leadership roles — whether that’s in their school, community, or future workplace.”
Students also connected with local not-for-profit organisations and explored volunteering opportunities.
The program culminated in a graduation celebration, allowing participants to reflect on their experiences and receive certificates acknowledging their achievements.
Greater Shepparton Secondary College partnerships manager Lisa Kerr praised the Future Leaders Program, calling it “an incredibly beneficial addition”.
“Over the course of the two-day program, it was inspiring to witness the students’ confidence grow significantly,” she said.
“It was truly refreshing to see young leaders from different schools come together, united in their passion to advocate for the wellbeing of our community.”
