Many readers were surprised to learn in January that the cameras were switched of in 2016 to accommodate construction of the new court house.
When operational in the 2015-16 financial year, the camera detected 32651 infringements, netting $715516 in fines.
In 2016-17, the number of infringements detected by the camera dropped to 353 for a total of $21005 in fines.
No infringements have been listed since then.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice and Community Safety said red light cameras helped save lives and contributed to the lowest road toll on record last year, when 211 people lost their lives.
‘‘It is never safe to speed or run a red light. Not only is it illegal but it puts the driver, passengers, and other motorists and pedestrians in serious danger. Every two hours someone is killed or suffers from serious, life-changing injuries as a result of road trauma,’’ she said.
‘‘Road safety cameras are just one tool used to enforce speed limits, change driver behaviour and keep our roads safe. There are multiple mobile speed camera sites in and around Shepparton, which can operate anytime. Reducing the harm caused by speeding on our roads is also a key priority for local frontline police.’’
Red light cameras activate when a motorist crosses the white line against a red light, according to Victoria Police.
‘‘A road safety red light camera is activated when a vehicle crosses the stop line and enters the intersection after the light/arrow turns red,’’ a police statement read.
‘‘If a vehicle is already partially or wholly over the stop line and within the intersection when the light/arrow turns red, an infringement will not be issued.”
