As the final candles of Hanukkah are prepared to be lit, Shepparton will pause to reflect on grief, solidarity and remembrance.
On Sunday evening, December 21 — the last day of Hanukkah — the Shepparton Interfaith Network will host a memorial at the Marker of the Shepparton Synagogue, on the corner of Doyles Rd and Poplar Ave, commencing at 6.30pm.
The gathering follows a tragic terrorist attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, December 14, when a father and son opened fire on a beachside gathering celebrating the first day of Hanukkah.
Fifteen people, including a 10-year-old child, were killed, and a further 42 were injured.
Local churches and faith leaders have expressed deep sorrow over the attack and are inviting the wider community to come together in support.
Attendees are welcome to lay flowers or place a stone in memory of those who lost their lives and in solidarity with the injured.
Event organisers described the memorial as “a fitting way” for Shepparton to mark the end of Hanukkah.
