This month, Moira Shire Council has teamed up with leading health agencies to spark conversations around men’s health and wellbeing.
From Tuesday, June 3 to Thursday, June 12, the council, in partnership with NCN Health and Yarrawonga Health, will host a series of free breakfasts across the shire.
Moira Shire Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson said the informal events aimed to provide a relaxed space to open conversations around men’s physical and mental health.
“Men’s health is often an issue that goes unspoken. And this is an opportunity, in partnership with our leading health agencies across the shire, to go where the people are,” he said.
“There won’t be structures, there won’t be speeches. We hope that people will take up the opportunity to come along and start those conversations.”
The breakfasts will run in four locations, including Cobram, Yarrawonga, Numurkah and Nathalia.
“Men’s health is a broad term,” Dr Emonson said.
“It is obviously about physical health, but it’s also about social connection and issues such as loneliness.
“Men’s health has been identified as one of those aspects that’s often difficult to bring forward in conversations in the community. There’s often a reluctance for men to talk about their health, and we think men will benefit from a concerted effort to create opportunities to become more aware and to start those conversations.”
It comes as the latest data from the Coroners Court of Victoria reveals at least 267 people — 188 of which were men — have lost their lives to suicide as of April this year.
