With school bells ringing again for Term 1, police and road safety authorities are reminding drivers to ease off the accelerator and stay sharp around school zones, where children are once again walking, riding and crossing in busy traffic.
The warning comes after a devastating 2025 on Victorian roads, with 52 pedestrians killed, including four children.
Experts say children are especially vulnerable near traffic because they are harder to see and have a limited ability to judge speed, distance and danger.
School speed zones are back in force from Wednesday, January 28 through to the end of Term 1 on Thursday, April 2.
The 40km/h limits apply on weekdays from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm.
Drivers can expect a surge in activity around schools during these times, with more pedestrians, cyclists, school buses and parents dropping off and picking up students.
Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said police would be out in force.
“Police will be highly visible around school zones this week to ensure reduced speed limits are adhered to,” he said.
Authorities say slowing down, staying focused and showing patience around school zones can make a life-saving difference.
