The Cobram U3A club is a vibrant social hub for retirees looking to stay connected and active.
The Cobram club is in its 16th year, it has 48 members and is open to both men and women.
Cobram U3A club secretary and treasurer Sybil Retallack has been a member of the club for six years, and said it was a great way to stay active after retiring.
“I wanted to do something rather than just be at home and be a housewife,” she said.
“So a friend of mine took me to a couple of places, and one of them was here, and I found that they’re a happy and welcoming group.”
Ms Retallack said the club did not fundraise and was simply a social group for people over the age of 55.
“We have guest speakers every month, and sometimes we have morning teas ... we go on trips, we have our classes,” she said.
“It’s just really for people that have finished work, but still want to be involved in something that interests them.”
Ms Retallack said her favourite part about the club was the social aspect.
“I’ve always been a person who likes to do things for other people, but I also find that it’s just nice to be able to sit and talk to people,” she said.
Cobram U3A club president Elaine Cartwright has been a member of the club for three years and said she really enjoyed it.
“I’m happy to be in a social group ... it gives me something to do, and the friendship is lovely as well,” she said.
The club offers various classes and activities including Needles ’n natters, a class for craft projects; Chat ’n chew, a social lunch every month at a different venue; and even game afternoons.
Other activities include a book club with monthly meetings to discuss the chosen book, and a history class with different DVDs shown each class, followed by a group discussion.
