The dance company will bring its Rekindling Dance Program back to Shepparton between February and May next year.
The news was announced this week by the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project.
The dance company recently took a trip to Shepparton, where an information session was provided to students, including a workshop showcasing elements of what the program has to offer.
As the program is centred on community collaboration, the Rekindling team also spent time at Rumbalara Elder Facility during their trip to connect with the residents.
Meeting the Elders was integral to the program’s process as they shared stories with the team that will be woven into the dances the students will learn.
It also ensures respect for local cultural protocols and permissions.
Youth program director Sidney Saltner said the program offers an opportunity to see the numerous and varied career paths that the arts can offer.
“Historically, the Yorta Yorta community has contributed a lot to the arts, so we are very much looking forward to nurturing the next generation of talent,” he said.
Program facilitator from the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project Amy De Paola said the student’s participation in the last workshop was promising.
“It was great to see Sidney and the team engage with the students,” she said.
“They are clearly very skilled and experienced in working with young people, and the students responded exceptionally well.”
The program will run between February and May 2024 over three gatherings and is open to 30 secondary students, current Year 6 students, Elders and community members.
