The plan includes 74 actions under four main streams: climate change leadership; accelerating the transition to zero net emissions communities; building a cool, climate resilient community; and supporting a thriving, climate-smart local agriculture sector.
The council has also committed to reducing its own carbon emissions to zero by 2030.
Cr Sam Spinks said a lot of work had gone on behind the scenes to detail the necessary actions.
“This is about the community and how council works with the community to have their targets for a safe climate future,” she said.
“This is really thinking about all the different parts of our community and the different ways they are impacted by climate and have to adapt to climate — this is not doing to (people), it is doing alongside.”
Cr Seema Abdullah said the response had been informed by the council’s Youth Committee as well as business, agriculture and other community groups.
“Council’s leadership and drive to address outcomes when it comes to climate is admirable,” she said.
Cr Shane Sali encouraged the community to take part in the consultation process.
“Consultation for a grassroots level is very important,’’ he said.
The motion to release the draft was passed unopposed.
Consultation closes on Friday, March 25. If you require assistance to complete your submission, please contact the council via email at council@shepparton.vic.gov.au or phone 5832 9700.
