For children, it’s a mix of excitement and nerves, while for parents it brings much the same — often accompanied by a sneaky wipe of tears as they share a final hug and watch their little ones head off on a brand-new life adventure.
For Murchison cousins Molly and Hurley Jefferies, the milestone is made even more special.
Both five years old and born on the very same day, the pair will begin school knowing they have each other by their side as they take this big first step together.
Starting this Thursday, January 29, at Murchison Primary School, the pair couldn’t be more ready.
“I’m really excited,” Hurley said.
“Especially because I have family here and I love maths and sport.”
Little Molly said she was feeling a mix of nerves and excitement, but knowing her big brother Mason would be there to look out for her made her feel braver.
Hurley was quick to reassure her, saying she had nothing to worry about because their teacher would be there to look after all the students.
There are 73 students enrolled at Murchison Primary School this year, with 15 of them starting out as Preps.
Prep teachers Mrs Brisbane and Mrs Harrop will share the role, ensuring plenty of one-on-one learning as the new students adjust and settle into school life.
Mrs Brisbane said she was excited for another year of teaching such a precious age group.
“I just love having the Preps and teaching them how we do things at school,” Mrs Brisbane said.
“They’re so enthusiastic and energetic, and they can’t wait to learn and make new friends.
“Getting to have them in their first year is really special and a great opportunity to help shape them for their future years at school.”
Hurley and Molly agreed on many things — apples over bananas, with red apples winning over green — and both agreed that eating healthy at school was important, although a little snack was definitely okay.
They were sure their parents would miss them, admitted to being a little worried when the word ‘homework’ was mentioned, and it was a definite win for sport and playtime over reading.
“I do love sport,” Molly said.
“But I love books too.”
Hurley admitted he didn’t love reading just yet, but said he was keen to learn how to write.
Both shared strong values around helping others if they seemed sad and telling a teacher if someone needed help — but most importantly, they said they were ready for this life-changing transition.
“I can’t wait,” Hurley said.
“I hope all the Preps everywhere have a great first day.”
Molly agreed.
