“As a consequence of the extreme weather events last week, Victoria experienced a large number of fires, some of which are still burning,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
“Victoria Police continues to work with its partner agencies in response to these fires.
“At this time, the overwhelming majority of fires are believed to be as a result of natural causes.
“The major fires, including those in Longwood, Ravenswood South and Walwa, are still under investigation to determine the cause.
“Such investigations are complex in nature and it would be premature to provide causal factor updates at this time.
“When police are in a position to provide confirmed information about the cause of any fire, we will do so.
“The investigation into the cause of the Longwood fire and the associated death is being led by detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad.
“This investigation remains ongoing, including the process to formally identify the person located deceased in the Longwood fire.”
