Planning application lodged for fish hatchery

A planning application has been lodged for the Visitors Information Centre, including a cod statue at the new Arcadia Fish Hatchery.

No details are provided for the statue but we already know they are big.

The Victorian Government is tipping in $3 million to build a visitor centre at the site which, it said, would feature "Australia’s biggest Murray cod statue" as well as barbeque facilities, an elevated lookout over the hatchery and a fish-themed playground.

Swan Hill has been home to a big Murray cod called Arnold which is 15 metres long, 5 metres high, and 3 metres wide.

It was originally built in 1991 as a prop for the movie Eight Ball.

The plot revolved around a promising architect and a recently released prisoner who meet when they both end up working on the same construction project, which just happens to be a big fiberglass Murray cod.

The original Big Murray Cod went on display in Tocumwal in 1968 following the trend set by the Big Banana, which opened in Coffs Harbour four years earlier.

Big, bigger and now biggest, coming soon to Arcadia.
