Deniliquin High School captains Hayden Doncon and Madeline Weir were among 100 students invited to visit NSW Parliament as part of the program.
With their trip partially funded by Denilquin High School P&C, Hayden and Madeline flew to Sydney from Albury and participated in a range of activities which expounded the virtues of putting your hand up and being counted for things that matter.
Parliamentarians told the audience of young leaders about what it takes to become a leader, many saying they admit they were not born to be leaders.
One speaker told the audience that he left school in Year 10 and that leadership is about what drives you and what you are prepared to fight for.
Another highlight of the day was being hosted by NSW Member for Murray Helen Dalton, along with students from other Murrray schools like Hay and Leeton.
Mrs Dalton spoke about the critical issue of water and other unique matters that affect regional and remote areas.
She also spoke of her political journey, which saw her enter parliament as a member of the Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party and then later go out on her own as an independent when the party’s approach did not align with the needs of her electorate.
Many members from the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council from constituencies represented by the schools in attendance participated in a similar meet-and-greet session.
The students were then divided into two groups and had the opportunity to attend question time in both houses.
Everyone was especially impressed with the detailed heritage restoration of the Legislative Council Chambers, the Deni attendees reported back.
After lunch, the group went to the impressive Government House to meet with the Governor of New South Wales Margaret Beazley .
This was a re-introduction for Hayden and Madeline, who first met Her Excellency when she visited Deniliquin last year.
