The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has recognised two significant tree species, with Echuca’a Long-Leaved Indian Pine and Kyabram’s London Plane vying for first place.

Environmental Heritage Advocate Jelena Ljubisic spoke to the Riverine Herald about trees’ critical role in the natural environment.
“The National Trust (Victoria) is pleased to be running this state competition once again. We look forward to an even bigger event this year and look to inspire future generations,” Ms Ljubisic said.

“We have been running this competition since 2016 to raise awareness about the importance of conserving Victoria’s natural heritage.”
The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is the state’s premier community-based heritage advocacy organisation, who works to protect and conserve places of heritage significance for future generations to enjoy.
For Ms Ljubisic, trees are critical to the natural world’s function and the whole planet’s wellbeing.
“It provides an opportunity for communities to raise the profile of trees significant to their region and highlights the benefits trees provide,” Ms Ljubisic said.
“An interesting fact is that the Long-leaved Indian Pine is native to the Himalayas and features at the Echuca Cemetery.”
“The competition has significantly increased in popularity over the years, and we have received many nominations for this year’s contest with trees from regional Victoria in the spotlight.”
