The intersection sits on a major highway and with the extensive growth in Kialla, including in the Riviera Park Estate, the site is becoming increasingly dangerous.
There have been multiple crashes there this year, including incidents involving three vehicles each on March 30 and April 7.
Ms O’Keeffe is urging Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne to allocate funding for a roundabout at the intersection before more major collisions occur.
“This intersection has become notorious across the region following several incredibly serious accidents,” she said.
“It’s a complex intersection with traffic entering and exiting the GV Highway from multiple directions.
“Greater Shepparton City Council has listed this intersection upgrade as a priority project and has been advocating to the Department of Transport and Planning for the inclusion of a roundabout.
“This is a straightforward project that would dramatically improve safety for all road users.”
The Riviera Park Estate Planning Committee has also raised concerns about the intersection, with a recent survey showing 94 per cent of residents cited an upgrade as their top priority.
“Locals are strongly supportive of an upgrade to the intersection and have also raised concerns about the location of the school bus stop,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“Kids are waiting for buses as B-doubles fly past at 80km/h, which poses an incredible safety risk.
“The community is calling for an immediate relocation of the bus stop on to River Rd West.
“The current location is neither safe nor appropriate.
“Transforming this intersection into a roundabout will alleviate these concerns and create a safer environment for road users and residents.
“I urge the minister to commit to funding an upgrade to this unsafe intersection.”
