On Saturday, May 31, bakeries, pies and pastry shops will be raising funds for brain cancer research in the nationwide ‘Baking for Brain Cancer’ event.
The Dalton family of Phil’s Pies and Pastries in Berwick launched Baking for Brain Cancer after wife and mother Tonie was diagnosed with brain cancer last year.
“We’ve done many fundraising and charity events in the past, but the Baking for Brain Cancer event is new this year,” Shepparton and Mooroopna North End Bakehouse owner Matt Aylett said.
“As the baking industry is so close and supportive of each other, there was no question that we would be supporting this, along with many other bakeries around Victoria and further.
“We will continue to support this in the future as well.”
And, as they say, the best way to a person’s heart is through their stomach.
North End Bakehouse will be hosting a fundraiser eating competition at its Mooroopna store on Saturday, May 31.
Participants will be seated side by side, facing a full plate of 10 vanilla slice donuts each.
When the bell rings, the eating begins.
“It may look easy to eat 10 of these, but we believe the challenge might surprise people,” Mr Aylett said.
The first contestant to finish the entire plate takes home a shiny trophy, a $50 North End Bakehouse voucher and the title of Baking for Brain Cancer Eating Challenge Winner 2025.
Competitors who don’t finish their donuts will be encouraged to take the leftovers home as a bonus for attempting the challenge.

And just before the big event, North End Bakehouse will be holding an auction on Thursday, May 29.
From 7am until 2pm, bidders will get the chance to win a full slab (32 pieces) of North End’s award-winning vanilla slice.
“We are encouraging businesses to get onboard for this and splash some cash for a great cause, and to then be able to treat their staff to Australia’s best vanilla slice,” Mr Aylett said.
To participate, visit the North End Bakehouse Facebook page on the day and place a bid on the auction post.
The highest bid at 2pm will be declared the winner, with all proceeds going to Baking for Brain Cancer.
“We urge everyone to come into our stores throughout the week to get some amazing food, but more importantly, to know that you are helping out a great, important cause,” Mr Alyett said.
“Every dollar counts, and we are also giving a chance to have some fun with it, too!”
Applications for the donut-eating challenge are still available, so give North End Bakehouse a call on 5821 0035 or inbox the Facebook page facebook.com/northendbakehouse to book your spot.
