St Mary’s Mooroopna kicked off the 2026 school year with a double celebration — part prayer, part proud moment — as the community gathered for an opening mass followed by its very first student leadership presentation assembly.

Students, staff and families filled the school with a sense of optimism and purpose, looking forward to the year ahead and reflecting on the values that guide the St Mary’s community.
But the spotlight quickly shifted to the school’s newest leaders, who stepped forward ready to serve and inspire — and maybe even help keep the tuckshop line moving smoothly.
School captains James Sibio and Ariana Vourgaslis were presented alongside vice captains Oliver DeMaria and Charlotte Armstrong.
Faith and justice captains for 2026 are Anesha Bhatti and Ajooni Kaur.
House leadership roles were awarded to Ethan Prygoda and Anabelle Barillaro for Archer House; Emma Lee and Bayden Newman for Ryan House; Ava Fisher and Indiana Tamburro for Marian House; and Logan Anstice and Ruby Woods for McAuley House.
The school was pleased to state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe, who presented certificates to each student leader.
Principal Elaine Vertriest said the ceremony highlighted the importance of student leadership within the school community.
“The event set a positive and faith-filled tone for the year ahead, with the new leaders encouraged to model respect, responsibility and service,” Ms Vertriest said.
The opening mass was led by Fr Ronald Masilang, with families joining staff and students to mark the beginning of the school year and recognise the students stepping into leadership roles.
MP Kim O’Keeffe presented certificates to all newly appointed student leaders.
