Libraries in Shepparton, Mooroopna, Nathalia, Violet Town, Cobram and Avenel have been upgraded as part of the Open Library project.
Upgrades at libraries in Cobram and Nathalia include CCTV installation, automated lighting, self-service kiosks and digital resources — allowing both libraries to operate from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.
Shepparton, Mooroopna, Violet Town and Avenel libraries will also have expanded hours, giving library users access to wi-fi, computers, study spaces and printing services outside non-operational hours.
The project at the Euroa, Numurkah and Tatura libraries launched in 2024.
Library members who want to use the program and access the library between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week, must first attend a safety induction session.
Funding for the project was provided by the Victorian Government’s 2023-24 Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, which aims to help councils and regional library corporations improve library buildings and services.
Goulburn Valley Libraries chief executive Felicity Macchion praised the initiative and said it was “a fantastic addition to these library branches and the wider Goulburn Valley community”.
“It will extend our library’s operating hours and offer a welcoming space for even more community members to enjoy,” she said.
Goulburn Valley Libraries board chair Gregory Carlson said the project would “be great for the GV Libraries and complement the existing services delivered at these branches”.
“The board is excited to introduce these extended library hours to our communities, emphasising the importance of providing additional hours for those who cannot access our libraries during our staffed hours,” he said.
Victorian Local Government Minister Nick Staikos visited Cobram Library on Thursday, June 5 to launch the program.
He said by upgrading infrastructure and expanding operating hours, the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program ensured libraries met communities’ needs.
“Libraries are so much more than books — they foster lifelong learners and contribute to the connections that strengthen and enrich Victorian communities,” Mr Staikos said.
“We recognise that our libraries provide a safe, supported community space for local people in the Goulburn Valley, and provide opportunities for locals to engage in a wide range of activities.”
