The Nepean by-election in May should not be read simply as a safe Liberal retention. The more important story sits beneath the headline: One Nation secured about a quarter of the primary vote in a seat it had never previously contested, in an electorate that does not naturally resemble traditional Hanson territory.

Just six months before Victoria votes in November 2026, the result will be closely studied by party strategists. By-elections are imperfect predictors, but they can reveal voter sentiment and demographic shifts that later become significant statewide.
