The milestone will be marked at the annual National Tree Day free community planting event, to be held at Tassiker Reserve on Sunday, July 26 from 10am to 1pm.
After becoming the first council in Australia to adopt the initiative in 2016, Greater Shepparton City Council has planted more than 200,000 indigenous plant species.
Both One Tree Per Child and the National Tree Day programs were founded by Olivia Newton-John and Jon Dee with one simple mission: to see every child plant at least one tree before finishing school.
Each year, council facilitates a native planting for every child under 18 in the municipality, with species chosen to help restore native fauna that have disappeared from the area.
The program’s longevity has relied heavily from the ongoing partnerships with local schools, kindergartens and community groups taking part year after year.
The event on Sunday will begin at 10am with celebratory speeches and a smoking ceremony before planting proceeds.
From noon, attendees can enjoy a free barbecue lunch and other community activities.
Gloves, tools, water equipment and refreshments will be provided on the day.
